A Special Night Out

This is difficult to judge as we all like different things, but here are a couple of suggestions;

The White Swan Hotel
Is located on Pickering high street. We think it is excellent, quite “foody”. A main course costs about £15- £18 so expect to spend about £25-£30 per head, excellent food.
Tel 01751 472288.

The Fox and Hounds
Located at Sinnington, about three miles out of Pickering on the way to Helmsley. It has a restaurant as well as the pub food and has a very good and well deserved reputation. You really need to book though especially on weekends; it is slightly pricier than some of the pub meals but is very good.
Tel 01751 431577

The Star Inn at Harome
The Star is Michelin star rated and is very highly thought of and a favourite with the grouse shooters. Harome village is just outside Helmsley (closed for food on Sunday evenings). Must book two months in advance for Friday or Saturday night!
Tel 01439 770397

The Feversham Arms at Helmsley
We recently visited for dinner and found the food excellent although expensive. They do offer a set price menu and we would highly recommend a visit.
Tel 01439 770766

Pub Meals
Most of the pubs and Inns in the area do have food available and generally seem to be child friendly, most have kid’s menus the best ones are probably out of Pickering in the villages.

Fox and Rabbit, Lockton
Located on the main Whitby road at Lockton about 6 miles from Pickering. The pub is always busy and serves excellent food. Steak night on Tuesday is always full so you have to book.
Tel 01751 460213 - www.foxandrabbit.co.uk

The Horseshoe Inn, Levisham
The Horseshoe Inn is a family run establishment set in the peace and tranquility of Levisham village within the North York Moors National Park, about 2 miles from the A169 Whitby to Pickering road. An idyllic destination for a relaxing country break or meal. New owners: fantastic food and great atmosphere.

The Royal Oak at Gillamoor
Through Kirkbymoorside drive towards the Moors for about 2 miles. It does both bar meals and has a restaurant.  The food is very good, it has a varied menu with quite an interesting choice of dishes.
Tel 01751 431414

Fish & Chips

I suppose because of our proximity to the sea and the popularity of the dish, the fish and chips are generally very good in the area, although some are better than others.

Eastgate Fisheries
The takeaway and cafe on Eastgate is particularly good and very convenient for Eastgate cottages at Pickering, it is about a 2 minute walk along Eastgate.

The best Fish Restaurants in the area are probably in Whitby. There are two that are locally acclaimed as the best;

The Magpie Cafe www.magpiecafe.co.uk Tel 01947 602058
Trenchers www.trenchersrestaurant.co.uk Tel 01947 603212

The vote is split on which is the best. You should expect to queue but in our experience it’s well worth it. They serve the classic Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas but also a good range of other really good fish dishes and are very child friendly.
